There are different kinds of protein that derive from whey, soy, pea, and brown rice ranging from flavors like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, chai, and many more! The different brands of protein supplements focus on achieving different things like weight loss, toning, and muscle building. Protein shakes and supplements are many people's go-to drink to start their morning; this is because they think that they are being healthy. Protein powders promise more energy, bigger muscles, and weight loss. But do you know everything that is in protein powder or what it is actually doing to your body?
What Are Protein Powders?
Protein powders are dietary supplements that contain a concentrated amount of protein. Protein can come in many different forms but the most common ones are whey, soy, and casein. “Whey is the most commonly used, because it’s a water-soluble milk protein,” says Peter Horvath, PhD, associate professor in the department of exercise and nutrition sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo. “It’s also a complete protein, so it’s got all those advantages.” (Complete proteins contain all nine of the amino acids necessary for human dietary needs.) Protein powders come in a wide range of flavors and vary in price.
When Do You Use Protein Powders?
Starting a program: If working out is new to you and you want to build a little bit more muscle, you will need more protein.
Amping up your workouts: If you normally work out for half an hour a few times a week, but now you’ve decide to train for a half-marathon, your body will need more protein.
Recovering from an injury: Athletes with sports injuries frequently need more protein to help them heal.
Why You shouldn't Use Protein Powders?
In well-known protein powder brands, low to moderate levels of lead, mercury, and arsenic have been found. Many powders are processed and also have artificial sweeteners, sugars, and artificial flavors that are not absorbed or broken down easily by the human body.
Finding REAL protein can be easy. Protein can be found in many meats, vegetables, yogurt, or eggs! Even though it may be easy to pour a scoop of "protein" into a cup and go, it may not be good for your body or your health.
